Sirolo and its History

From prehistoric origins to the medieval village up to the present day

Sirolo is not only a natural gem, but a place that preserves a deep and layered history. It’s a story that begins hundreds of thousands of years ago, continues with the glorious pre-Roman civilizations, passes through the Middle Ages with castles and monks, and reaches us through the lives of fishermen. Discovering Sirolo means traveling through time, exploring the traces that the past has left imprinted in the rock, in archaeological finds, and among the village’s narrow streets.

Prehistory and remote origins

Human presence in the Sirolo area dates back to ancient times. On Mount Conero, an important Lower-Middle Paleolithic site has been discovered that documents the existence of human settlements as early as 100,000 years ago. But the story of the place is even older: on the cliff overlooking the Due Sorelle Beach, 11 fossil footprints of marine reptiles dating back to the Cretaceous period have been found. Although the site is not open to visitors, it is one of only three places in the world with similar evidence, confirming the geological uniqueness of this coastline.

The golden age: the Piceni civilization

During the Iron Age, between the 9th and 3rd centuries BC, the Sirolo area was one of the most flourishing centers of the Piceni civilization, as evidenced by the numerous necropolises unearthed. The most extraordinary example is the vast "I Pini" Archaeological Area, recognized by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage as the only Piceni necropolis in the Marche that can be visited across an entire sector. Here, the sumptuous "Tomb of the Queen" was brought to light, a 6th-century BC burial which, with its incredible grave goods, revealed the wealth of the local elites. To make this history even more vivid, in 2022 the Archaeodrome of Sirolo was inaugurated. This faithful reconstruction of a 5th-century BC Piceni settlement is unique in the Marche and allows you to physically enter a house of the period and observe a pottery kiln, offering an unprecedented immersive experience.

The Middle Ages: fortress and spiritual refuge

The current profile of the historic center is a direct legacy of its medieval past. The Castle of Sirolo, probably built on pre-existing structures by the Counts Cortesi, already existed at the beginning of the 11th century. Thanks to a grid street system, alleys, towers, and an imposing defensive wall, the village became a truly impregnable stronghold. During this period, Sirolo was not only a military fortress but also an important place of spiritual refuge: it became one of the main meeting points for various monastic orders fleeing persecution.

Recent history: the life of fishermen

The more recent history of Sirolo is inextricably linked to the sea. Starting from the 19th century, the community based its life on fishing, developing traditions and a deep connection with the coast. This heritage is still visible today in the characteristic fishermen’s huts on Urbani Beach, a touch of authenticity that tells stories of hard work and love for the Adriatic.
