Spiaggia del Frate
La Spiaggia del Frate or Sotto Santa is a corner of paradise immersed between the white rock and the green flora of the Monte Conero. Here the only sound you will hear is that of the sea waves, a sweet melody that soothes and calms the heart.
La spiaggia del Frate is a splendid cove of fine gravel, framed by the greenery of the Parco del Conero and the white of the limestone rock, well-maintained and suitable for couples.
It is called this because a convent of minor friars from the thirteenth century once stood at the summit, but the historical residents of Numana call it “Sottosanta” because the cemetery for cholera victims, where all those who died of cholera in the 1800s were buried, stood right above it, and for this reason, “Sottosanta” means under the cemetery.
The distinctive feature of the beach is a large white rock that juts out of the sea, called “Sasso del Bo” (Ox).
La spiaggia del Frate is located in the Riviera del Conero and can be reached on foot via some paths and a walk of about 10-15 minutes. You can reach it in these ways:
- from the centre of Numana you can take a paved downhill road and once you arrive at the Spiaggiola you can continue along the coast until you reach the Spiaggia del Frate
- from the tourist port of Numana walking along the beach you will first encounter the Spiaggiola and then the Spiaggia del Frate
- From Piazza Nuova in Numana you can descend along an indicated path and arrive at the Spiaggiola, then continue to the Spiaggia del Frate.
